Graphic Design Portfolio Tips: What Sri Lankan Agencies Look For

Your portfolio decides whether you get a graphic design interview in Sri Lanka, often within the first 30 seconds. At Cypher Digital, we review designer portfolios every month. Most candidates have the talent. Many still miss out because their portfolio does not show it clearly.

This guide shares exactly what a Sri Lankan digital marketing agency looks for, so you can fix your portfolio before you apply. If yours is ready now, you can send it for our graphic designer vacancy in Sri Lanka today.

What we check in the first 30 seconds

Recruiters do not study every piece. We scan, and the first three pieces decide whether we keep looking. In those first seconds we ask:

    1. Does the first piece look professional? Clean layout, readable text, good colour choices.
    2. Is this relevant to our work? Social media creatives, ads and branding matter most to an agency.
    3. Is there variety? Different brands, styles and formats show you can adapt.
    4. Does the link open easily? A Google Drive link that asks for access permission is often where the review ends.

Put your strongest, most relevant work first. Never start with your oldest or weakest piece just because it was your first project.

How many pieces should a portfolio have?

Show 10 to 15 strong pieces. Quality beats quantity every time. Fifty average designs hide your best work. Twelve excellent ones make a confident impression.

A good mix for a Sri Lankan agency role looks like this:

Type of workHow manyWhy it matters
Social media posts and carousels4 to 6This is the daily work at most agencies
Ad creatives (Facebook, Instagram, Google)2 to 3Shows you understand selling, not just decoration
Brand identity (logo, colours, stationery)1 to 2 projectsProves you can think about a brand as a whole
Motion posts or reels2 to 3Short video is now standard for most brands
Print (flyers, menus, brochures, packaging)1 to 2Still requested by many local clients

7 things that make a portfolio stand out

These are the details that move a portfolio from "maybe" to "let's call this person".

    1. Real Sri Lankan context. Campaigns for local businesses, Avurudu, Vesak or Christmas posts, and Sinhala or Tamil layouts show you understand the market.
    2. A clear message in every ad. We look for one main idea, a readable headline on a phone screen and a clear call to action.
    3. Consistency within a brand. If you show three posts for one brand, they should clearly belong together.
    4. Motion work. Even simple animated posts in After Effects or CapCut put you ahead of most junior applicants.
    5. Your thinking. For two or three projects, add a short note on the brief, your idea and the result. This tells us how you solve problems.
    6. Clean presentation. Use mock-ups sparingly, keep backgrounds simple and let the design be the focus.
    7. Honest labels. Mark concept work as "concept" or "personal project". We respect honesty, and we will find out in the interview anyway.

    Common portfolio mistakes we see

Most rejected portfolios fail on presentation, not talent. Avoid these common mistakes:

    • Broken or private links. Always test your link in a private browser window before sending.
    • Too many similar pieces. Ten posters in the same style show one skill, not ten.
    • Copied or template-heavy work. We can spot an unedited Canva or Freepik template quickly. Templates are fine as a starting point, but the final design must be yours.
    • Spelling mistakes. Typos in English, Sinhala or Tamil suggest you will make them in client work too.
    • Tiny, unreadable text. Most people see social ads on a phone, so design for small screens.
    • No contact details. Add your name, phone or WhatsApp number and email on the first and last page.
    • Claiming team work as your own. If you worked on part of a project, say which part.

No experience? How to build a portfolio from scratch

You do not need paying clients to build a strong portfolio. Many of our best junior hires started with self-made projects:

    • Redesign a real local brand. Create a social campaign for a café, tuition class or salon you know, and label it as a concept.
    • Invent a business. Build a full identity for an imaginary brand: logo, colours, packaging and three social posts.
    • Take on design challenges. Weekly briefs from online design communities give you fresh ideas to practise.
    • Help people you know. Design for a friend's small business, your university society or a local charity. Real work, even unpaid, counts.

    Where to host your portfolio

Choose a format that opens quickly on a phone, because many recruiters check portfolios on mobile first.

    Frequently asked questions

How many projects should a junior graphic designer portfolio have?

Around 10 to 15 strong pieces is ideal. It is enough to show range without hiding your best work.

Can I include concept or practice work in my portfolio?

Yes. Most junior portfolios rely on concept work. Just label it clearly as a concept or personal project.

Is a Behance portfolio better than a PDF?

Both work. Behance is easy to share and looks professional, while a PDF is handy for quick applications. Many designers keep both.

Should I include Canva designs in my portfolio?

You can, if the final design is clearly your own work. Avoid unedited templates, because recruiters recognise them easily.

Where can I send my graphic design portfolio in Sri Lanka?

Send it to agencies that are hiring. Cypher Digital accepts portfolios for our graphic design jobs in Sri Lanka directly via WhatsApp.
